Tips, polls, updates / Re: Statistics and high scores

I noticed that there are trainig matches included in the top rated list (e.g. in Raging Bulls).
Yes training matches are included. We considered offering online matches only high scores but decided against it in the end.

In Circle The Wagons dominates Verboten the whole top rated list! Maybe it'll be good to show only the best match of each player, although then the humans don't will be get the appreciation they deserve.
Yes I have thought of that, but then the database queries becomes much more complicated and most importantly much slower. It was already a struggle to display all these stats in a reasonably short time (below 0.4s for each table).

Quote
I am a little bit confused about the sorting order of the "latest top rated matches": Is this chronological? Because (e.g.) in Level X there is a 1928 rating
between several eighteenhundreds. The dates are only given in months/years.
Yes chronological. Last matches on top.

Quote
In Level X the highest rating range group in the average scores includes over 18000 matches! Is it possible to subclassify them further?
Unfortunately, there has been very few (86 matches) between players over 1900. That's why we don't display it. We stop displaying information when there are fewer than 500 matches for statistical significance.

Quote
Last but not least: I wondered when I changed to the new statistics that there not opened a new browser tab like in the callenges-ranking lists of Ranging Bulls - when I closed the tab Happy Meeple was gone ... Maybe it's why there is the ability to replay the matches?
Yes maybe opening a new tab would be better. Not sure. It is easy to come back to the platform anyway so I don't think it is a big deal. If we open a new tab, it leads to other issues, like having two tabs with Happy Meeple pages.

Thanks for your nice words. Nice to read that you enjoyed these stats and high scores.

Tips, polls, updates / Statistics and high scores

The following text has just been published in the "List of updates" thread. I am copying it below to open a new thread on the specific subject.

Please feel free to comment and help us improve on it!

2022/02/07 Statistics and high scores

You can now see a list of statistics and high scores for all games.

- average scores (per player position and rating range)
- average win rates (per player position and rating range)
- high scores
- high losing scores
- low winning scores
- top rated matches
- latest top rated matches

For all tables, when a minimum rating is indicated, it means that both players must have this minimum rating for a match to be considered. So, for example, in the averages table, the row >1500 takes into account all games where both players had over 1500 at the start of the game.

Matches with the weakest bots have been excluded everywhere except in the averages table.

Some earlier matches (from 2012-2013-2014) were excluded because we did not record either scores or ratings.

You can have direct access to screenshots of the match as well as replays, provided they were recorded. Screenshots and replays were available from march 2018.

See here the stats and high scores for Cartographers: https://www.happymeeple.com/en/board-games/cartographers/stats-high-scores/

I am sure this will answer many questions. Have fun with all this good data!

2021/12/16 Major upgrade

A major upgrade (server, PHP, Mysql) had to be done as fast as possible following issues with our SSL certificate. As a result the platform was down for 3 days. Fortunately, no major bugs happened after that (which is a bit of a miracle given the amount of changes applied in a very short time).

At the same time, Facebook login has been disabled following repeated difficulties. It was not possible to keep this one-click login feature alive unfortunately. From now on, you can login with the same email address (use the standard login). You can ask for a new password if you have forgotten it. In case the email address that was provided by Facebook when your Happy Meeple account was created is not valid anymore, you will not be able to receive a new password. Please get it touch with us via the contact form and we will sort it out for you. Please let us know your old email, your new one and your full name.

2022/01/04 Ranking lists speed

We have made various optimizations on our ranking to speed them up. Let us know if some of them are still very long (more than 2 seconds).
As you may be aware, rankings for individual games are also available via external pages (no need to be logged in to see them). For example, https://www.happymeeple.com/en/board-games/cartographers/ranking/. The speed of these external pages has also been improved. Finally, in the past, inactive and deleted players still showed up in these external pages by mistake. This stands corrected. External and Internal ranking lists should be the same.

After looking into this, we believe that we had already done modifications to the text to make sure everything was clear. So in the end, we did not change anything on that side. I think lots of players read tutorials a bit too quickly and miss important information as a result. We can't blame anyone. That's human nature to want to be playing immediately rather than reading.  ;D

We however corrected the bug that made "Undefined" appear on screen. This was a result of HexRoller implementation. Some extra details (in case of challenge failures) are provided in HexRoller. But this was not reflected in the Raging Bulls implementation which partially uses the same code (for challenges).

So thanks for pointing out the issue!

Have fun and Merry Christmas!

You are not the first one to be confused about this. The games asks you which building you want to build. That does not mean it is already built. It only means that you chose what kind of building you are building.

To actually complete the building, you need to cross all numbers as Hugo pointed out.

I'll try to make this a bit clearer, by an extra sentence or an extra visual clue. Better late than never.

23
Bots are unlocked automatically when you reach a certain rating. Ratings only evolve as you play online. So you need to play online.

Playing online is the main way of playing. That's why.

But I understand that it is somewhat counter-intuitive to need to play online to be able to play "offline". You are not the first one to ask.

I hope this clarifies.

NaN means Not a Number in IT. No idea why this came up. Anybody else ever seen this?

I have just checked our partner's offers for Cyber Monday. I am not sure how they can offer these prices, but there are some incredible deals out there, like:
Wingspan at £34.49,
Terraforming Mars at £38.49,
or Great Western Trail at £26.99.

Hello all,

Christmas is coming. It is time to remind you to buy some games.

This year is a bit special. Indeed, while the Covid pandemic is still going on and the global economy is slowly recovering, there are still massive issues in the logistical chain. Lots of things can't be produced as much as they are needed and lots of things can't be shipped quickly enough. This is particularly true for board games. A lot of them are produced in China (not all of them fortunately) and so it is expected that many board games will be out of stock for Christmas this year.

I would therefore recommend that you buy your games early to avoid disappointment.

We'd appreciate if you used one of our trusted partners for your Christmas shopping. This will help us earn a little bit money. Please see above for the full list.

Thanks for your help!

Nicolas Guibert.

Happy Meeple community / Happy Meeple name stolen
« on: 19/10/21, 11:57am »
Hello all,

We would like to inform you of the following sad news.

A board game publishing company in Belgium has been launched. Its name is "Happy Meeple games".

We would first like to state that this company has nothing to do with us.

This makes us very angry. We can't understand how someone can think that it is fine to use a variation of our name for a board game publishing company.

We reached out to them and are now in touch with their lawyer. For the moment, they deny any wrongdoing. Their main line of defence is that offline game publishing and online game publishing are not the same domain.

We argue that we have the same partners (publishers) and the same customers. It is therefore the same domain.

As I said, we are very angry.  >:(

Any advice welcome.

We have scheduled tasks (they are called CRONs) that run with a certain frequency (every 10 minute for rankings for example, but some are once a day).

For some technical reason (the server not being able to access https pages any more), all tasks failed. We did not manage to correct the issue fully, but found a workaround.

Hello,

If the "let's go" button is showing, then the match is actually started and you won't get a "match cancelled".

The "match cancelled" should only occur when the opponent does not reach the game page or the game page fails to load/connect properly.

The most likely explanation is that the player leaves the website at the same moment the game is created. They don't realize that the game has started. We have no other option but to cancel the match. Another explanation is that the game page fails to load/connect as stated above.
