Circle The Wagons / Re: A Cautionary Tale

True. And really, any of us can make a mistake. Especially late at night after a long day's work.

Happy Meeple community / Extend Time to Join a Game
« on: 13/11/20, 07:31pm »
I feel like 10 seconds is not enough time to allow another player to join. Sometimes I am a split-second too late, and the player starts with a bot, instead. In most cases, when I start a game, I would prefer to play against a real person. Is there any way to allow someone to join (if the initiating player enables the feature) up to the point that a game with a bot has actually started?

This still hasn't been fixed? :(
I complained about this a long time ago, and they said "well-noted". But apparently never changed a thing!

See my post with a suggested fix here:

Levels, Missions, or Stages all seem to make sense.

Stages seems the best word to me. Levels is generic, and implies something ongoing. Missions feels more like part of a more advanced setting in the game.

Actually, that's not a bad idea. In fact, Finito is pretty much themeless, so I could create my own version with a theme and some quirks to make it more up my alley. Something like that probably would sell. Maybe I'll make a prototype for the next gamecon I attend!

But as far as the designers and their intentions go, I think most designers just want to push something out that's good enough to make money. And they are usually all up for expansions that alter the game significantly. So the only issue in this case, or any other, really, would be whether the designer wants to expand their game in that way.

Also, I didn't realize until recently that all the games on Happy Meeple were already in existence prior to the site's creation. That said, of course changing the rules is out of the question. I'd be better off going to board game geek and directing my ideas to the designers there. So, for anyone else who has an idea for rule changes, follow me to boardgamegeek.com!

Happy Meeple community / Notification of Open Table
« on: 17/06/19, 06:46pm »
I often prefer to wait to play with a real person rather than a bot. So I will open 4 tables of different games and do other things until someone joins one of my tables. The problem is that sometimes a player wants to play a different game, and if they open a table for it, and I am busy doing other things, I may not see their open table.

What I would like is an option to be notified of open tables if I am currently doing other things but waiting for a game. It would be nice if while I'm studying Spanish or German on Duolingo, for example, but I have the Inn open on a tab, if someone opens a table for Lost Cities, a little pop-up appears letting me know and giving the option to join.

Happy Meeple community / Poster Status: Newbie?

I've been noticing that forum members status seems to increase with the number of posts. I surmise it's something like this:
0-49 Newbie
50-99 Jr Member
100-199 Member
200-299 Full member
300-399 Senior member
400+ Hero member

With people posting so infrequently on here, I think there should be a change. Here are my recommendations:
0-9 Newbie
10-19 Jr Member
20-49 Member
50-99 Full member
100-199 Senior member
200+ Hero member

With the revised format, players won't all be Newbies on there, and the statuses will reflect reality more closely.

I am mentioning these together because they have similar elements, and learning one facilitates learning the others.

I recommend starting with Agricola, a fun farming game of up to 5 players. I've found that even 10 year olds can handle the family game version. There are 2 ways to play: the family game--simple (without cards); and the advanced game (with cards). A full game (4-5 players) takes about 2 hours.

Le Havre is so awesome (it's my 2nd favorite game). In it you will collect resources, construct buildings, use your own and other players buildings as action spaces. Ships help you keep people fed and make a profit through shipping. It's a highly economic game. It usually takes at least 2 1/2 hours.

Caverna is like a combination of the previous 2 games in some ways, but with additional features and lots of quirks. You can do horticulture, raise livestock, mine (you can even keep donkeys in your mine!) and add special rooms to your home. One of the more fun elements is equipping an agent with a weapon and sending them out on quests to get a variety of resources, and leveling them up. This is a game I have heard very few people complain about. The downside is, a full game takes at least 3 hours.

I agree...much better with bigger cards. And after you get America, get Europe, because you need the train stations! Without them, 5 player games turn from fun to frustrating and can even generate unpleasant feelings and animosity. ALWAYS use train stations when playing with the max number of players for a given map!

Other board games / Re: [Dominion]
« on: 10/05/19, 11:36pm »
I love Dominion. It will never get old, because there is so much variety in the setup. And even playing the same setup twice can be fun if you want to try a different strategy. The base game can be acquired for 30 bucks or less, and it is super valuable all by itself. Takes dozens of games before you start wanting an expansion. The game is easy to learn and one of the quicker board games out there. It's definitely in my top 10.

World, castle, market... / Re: Wheatfield
« on: 10/05/19, 11:27pm »
Ah. I finally saw this was replied to! I can tell that you don't like complainers, Daiana! I'm glad we're still friends! Anyway, I've adjusted to the Wheatfield. It is a nice way to get in some extra games occasionally.

Still, I wish it were more flexible (like I could harvest it within 3 days after it's grown until worrying about rot).

I like it! So nice to be able to easily quit a game now. Thank you!

Tips, polls, updates / Re: Magic Potion extra power?
« on: 06/05/19, 05:02am »
I think it would be good to allow players using magic potion to go straight into a game with a bot without waiting to see if someone else jumps in. But if they want to play real players, then something should indicate that they're using potion (make them glow?) and their opponents only lose 1 food per game.
