Tips, polls, updates / Re: Feedback on the Daily Meeple

Mike,
The size of the font is the intended one. Thanks for posting the attachment. I don't know if you added it later, but I could not see your attachment first. So I checked I could post an attachment myself. But now I see your attachment so everything is fine.
So yes, this is the normal font for recent news. If your friend has done something special since you last logged in, it will be shown in a bigger font. Or if you are logged in and they have just done something interesting. Apparently it is not obvious to you.
Did you blank out the names of your friends? At first I thought there was some sort of bug before I thought about this more likely option.

Stéphane,
Now I get it. The repeated "Successful wins" has already been spotted by 3 persons (including you). We will do something about it soon. Don't worry! This is only The Daily Meeple version 1. It will improve quickly in the coming weeks/months.

Pouche,
I really appreciate you taking the time to come back to me, even if it is not really the kind of thing I like to hear (as you imagine). It shows that you care for the platform. And that's the most important thing. Thanks also for your compliments! They are well heard and appreciated.
It was the intention to offer games over several rounds. Actually Finito has been programmed like this from the start. It would be relatively "easy" to replug the match (match = several games) element in terms of coding. But not so easy in terms of interface. How would you cope with it with the meeples system, etc. It would be a headache and I don't need an extra headache :) So maybe some day, but not tomorrow.
The new layout of the top part is much higher that the previous one. But the buttons have the same size as before. Someone else also pointed out that the buttons were too small but they did not change. Maybe they need a bit more room around them to look bigger. But then we lose a few extra pixels in height which is not desirable.
You don't need to get to the news to get your loot. It is already credited when the news is generated. So you can ignore it if you know what it is talking about.
Hiding the Daily Meeple would not be very pratical (I don't want to manage two different layouts, I have done that in the past, too much extra work for little gain) as well as not convenient for the future. Keep in mind that more things are coming like Daily quests or player targets/goals or ranking news or even platform important news or offers. Wheat field harvest time might also be added there too. So, many things will come there.
Lots of players are like you wanting to play, compete and not socialize and I perfectly respect that. But it is my job to make this place friendly and try a way to make it grow. Happy Meeple cannot be the place of board gamers liking quick games because that's too small a market. We want to get in touch with the mass market. And we keep looking for ways to make the platform easier and easier to use and more and more friendly. Be assured that I don't want to aleniate any player. At worst, you'll need to scroll a little bit when accessing the menu page. My bet is that you will soon forget about this.
Again thanks for taking the time to exchange on this. It is only by hearing from players that I can get a good idea on how the platform is used and what the needs are.

Guys, send me a private message on the platform and I'll credit you some coins. You deserve it.

Stéphane, I don't get it. I have got it in French here and "Victoires successives" is there in French.

What do you see exactly? In what section of the Daily Meeple? And what text do you see when you click on the link?

2016/05/05 - The Daily Meeple

Today the big update concerns The Daily Meeple, a personalized newspaper that gets updated every time you come to the menu page.
At the moment, The Daily Meeple contains news about yourself, your friends and the forum. This will be improved over time. Friends recent matches should be added soon as well as a full page mode giving more details about each news as well as more news.
In the past important news such as "Successive wins", "New Trophy", "New Meeple" interrupted the experience in between games which was unpleasant and illogical. The news are now displayed in the Daily Meeple (the most important ones blink) instead. So the important news will still be here but players will be able to choose the moment they read them.

Please give feedback on this update in the following thread!

Hi Matej,

Sorry to hear about your issues.

I have seen a few users complaining about freezes lately. But ours statistics do not show any increase in the frequency of unfinished games.

So I am afraid that without more information I can't do much.

Have a look at your connection indicator (is is green?) when problems arise!

Thanks for reporting it! Very much appreciated.

Nicolas.

Hi Mike A.,

I said on the Reddit original post that I could see at least two good reasons for having fast evolving ratings (big K coefficient rather than small). And later I explained more or less my thoughts.

Basically, noone wants new players to be discouraged. So their rating needs to evolve quickly if they are somewhat good. Actually, we use an even bigger K for new players to make this even truer. The other reason why I think a (too) big K is better than a (too) small K is that it brings more variety, more fun to the game. Even if rating variations are sometimes a bit too harsh or a bit too positive, at least they give life to your experience on the platform. Highs and lows are good for fun I think, as long as it is not going too far.

The ideal coefficient K is one that optimizes the prediction value of the rating. In other words, the best K is the one that leads to a rating that can predict future outcomes the best. If K is too small or too big, players ratings are less accurate, either because they don't reflect players progress fast enough or because they take latest results too much into consideration. In Chess for instance, I saw a document explaining that the ideal K was 24 when the one they used was 15 or 20.

I hope this answers your questions. Rating systems are a fascinating world.

PS: the FIFA (football) ratings are absolutely awful. Instead of using a ELO system or something similar they devised a completely stupid independent system that has so many flaws it is hard to believe.

Thanks for voting! The Daily Meeple is now the official name of the Happy Meeple newspaper.

The newspaper will be customized for each user. It will always be displayed on top of the main menu page in a compact form. A bigger format will be available to see more news and older news.

I hope the first part of all this (the compact form) will be released this week. Translations are now ready so it should not be too long. However a few things still need to be added and most importantly we must check many things. The update has led to much code rewriting so the platform could break in many places. We need to look for bugs very closely.

Have fun with our games!

Hi all,

I have just published a short study about measuring skill versus luck in games on Reddit.

The study uses stats coming from Happy Meeple platform so you will certainly find it interesting.

An up vote on the Reddit thread is appreciated.

Feel free to react there or here!

Please help me make a decision! This will be released soon (a couple of days).

Thanks!

Happy that you are happy Vreni!

For the sake of accuracy, we credited Magic Potion to your account not gold coins. You can start enjoying it right now. You have nothing more to do.

Have fun!

Gold, Magic potion / Magic Potion. The winner is...
« on: 25/04/16, 09:18am »
Hello,

Thanks for your taking part!

The correct answer was 603 games.

I can see that most of you were optimistic. Here was a simple way to get close to the answer:

At any given time, there are about 2 games of Lost Cities running in the inn. Each game takes about 4 minutes. It means there are about 30 games of Lost Cities per hour or 720 per day.

Congratulations to Vreni S. that wins a week of Magic Potion. I hope you will enjoy it, Vreni!

Have fun all! We will certainly be back with these contests some day. Watch this space!

Migrato / Re: Possible bug?
« on: 24/04/16, 09:22pm »
Thanks for reporting this Paul! Very much appreciated.

From the elements you reported it is indeed a bug. I need to have a look at it. However, this very same situation must have happened many times in the past so if a bug existed it shoud have happened many many times already. Mystery here...

Do you remember at what time you were playing and against what player/bot?
